WORKING WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

10th August 2026

Working with a person who uses, or has used, violence requires more than simply “managing behaviour” in the room. It requires a careful understanding of safety, accountability, engagement, children’s best interests, and the boundaries of our role as impartial practitioners.

It also requires us to think carefully about connection.

How do we engage with a person who has used violence in a way that is appropriate, boundaried and purposeful?

How do we keep the focus on the best interests of the children?

How do we avoid collusion, while still creating enough engagement for the process to be meaningful and safe?

These are some of the areas we’ll be exploring in our upcoming training on working with domestic and family violence in mediation, particularly around managing power dynamics, working appropriately with people who use violence, and staying within role while doing this work with skill, safety and care.
